The Playford Project
Useful Sites:
Redacted Dances:
(1) Upon a Summers Day
No changes from traditional SCA redaction.
(2) Blew Cap
This is a good beginners dance - simple, yet interesting. Compare against Dels version.
(3) The Night Peece
This was in the Lilies Ball (yay us!)
We like the idea of doing this dance 3x through since the dance will end C2, C3, C1 and going 3x through the entire dance will reset the lead couple to position A.
(4) Boateman
Taught this one at Lilies.
Very cool. Three couples in a line. Each verse divides set into two groups - usually top three and bottom three. Final verse has three doing a circle around one person of the center couple.
(5) The Begger Boy
Taught this one at Lilies, too.
Another fairly simple yet fun one for 3 couples.
(6) Parsons Farewell
***This one needs to be revisited. Part of our redaction doesn't match the original.
(7) Bobbing Joe
New progression.
(8) The New Exchange
Lots of switching places. Different take on sets and turns - instead of turning, you switch places with our partner.
(9) The Whish
***Very interesting - set in counts of 14 rather than the usual 16. Currently have 3 different ways to read the final verse that we'll need to address.
(10) Stingo, Or the Oyle of Barly
***Looks fun, but we need to figure out what's going on in the final verse.
(11) The Wherligig
***We need to come back to this one. We skipped it because of various questions about "that again" and long vs short versions, etc.
(12) Picking of sticks
***We need to do more research on this one before we can redact it - the music in our copy of Playford does not match the dance steps described. We need to find the correct music.
(13) The Old Mole
Kinda fun dance. Taught this one at Shattered Crystal - still unsure how the second verse should play out.
(14) Grimstock
No changes from traditional SCA redaction.
(15) Wooddicock
Nice. Simple. Slight twist on "traditional" English Country in that it has an extra Chorus at the end (F&B, do something - sides, do something - arms, do something, do something).
(16) Greenwood
Nice mixer. Very long, though.
(17) The Saraband
***A bit confusing - we need to figure out what's going on in the final set.
(18) Hit and misse
Very simple - in the "Upon a Summers Day" style.
(19) Confesse
Three couples in a line, but with 2 men and 4 women. Very cool, very fun! This was a hit at Lilies.
(20) Mage on a Cree
Circle dance for 4 couples. Both easy and fun
Taught this one at Lilies. We managed to figure out how the multiple turns worked in the last verse: Each man needs to step into the center of the circle to start the first turn, then when that turn is over, he can simply turn to the next woman from the middle of the set.
