HEY!

I can't blame Stanley Bing (AKA Gil Schwartz, according to Wikipedia) for this, but it still ticks me off because I happen to do this for a living. His readers sent in hundreds of bulls**t jobs. And they picked 20 favorites - jobs that are the most satisfying, lucrative and least useful. Here, in readers' own words, are the best bulls**t jobs.
1.Communications manager
Essentially you're getting paid well - in the six figures up to 50 percent of your base for bonus - to write e-mails, memos and articles for senior management that their employees have no interest in reading. Oh, and through these written communications we're supposed to inform and engage employees so that they're proud of the company they work for. [MORE]
Just to be clear, this job (MY JOB) beats out Professional Clairvoyant, Robot Operator, and Door Monitor. No respect, I tell ya...

Yes, I'm Insane

So we had a Halloween party.

The theme was "Heroes & Villains."

Guess who I dressed up as?

That's right, The Monarch from the Venture Bros. show.

Yes, I'm insane.

Shout Out to the J-Man!

I recently had the honor of working with an HR intern whom nobody could accurately name. His name started with a J, but it was alternately Justin, James, Jeff...who the hell knows.

This is how he got named J-Man by yours truly.

Today is the last time I will see J-Man (his internship ends on Monday), but he made a special request before he left: say hi to him on my blog before he goes.

So this one's for you, J-Man. Good luck in your next adventure!

Scouts Faulted for Lack of Lightning Safety

Just found this. Looks like one of my distant relatives was hit by lightning. :(

CLIFTON , N.J. – The forecast was ugly the day Matthew Tresca died.

The National Weather Service warned throughout the afternoon of severe weather in the Pocono Mountains where the teenager and more than 300 other Boy Scouts were at a one-week camp.

At the end of supper, as lightning flashed in the distance, scout leaders dismissed the boys from the dining hall and sent them to their tented campsites in the woods. Around 7 p.m., lightning struck a tent pole near the picnic table where 16-year-old Matthew sat under a tarp. He suffered cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead within 90 minutes. [MORE]

The Fred Astaire Dance Studios' 22nd Tri-Star Championships

We came back on Saturday from The Fred Astaire Dance Studios' 22nd Tri-Star Championships in Groton, CT. Approximately 200 students competed in both Ballroom (waltz, Viennese waltz, foxtrot and tango) and Rhythm (swing, rumba, cha cha, mambo, salsa, bolero and samba) dances. The dancers were judged from the beginner to the advanced levels. The participants came from all over New England representing the Fred Astaire Dance Studios from Belmont, Boston, Springfield and Worcester, Massachusetts and Canton, Glastonbury, Hamden, Norwalk, South Windsor, Trumbull and West Hartford, Connecticut.

My wife and I competed in 12 different events, four each of Foxtrot, Tango, and Waltz. Foxtrot's not my strong suit (we're best at Tango, we "have the attitude"), but it didn't matter too much because there's very few amateur couples who compete. In the two cases where we were competing against amateur couples, we beat 'em!

This means we placed first place in EVERY competition. While it's nice to receive an award just for showing up, the two heats where we had actual competition (and thus would have potentially been in second place) counted more. The judges were very kind in any case.

This is basically my excuse for why I've fallen behind on my writing. Although I plan to catch up over the next few weeks, it's going to be a struggle. We were training for that competition for a month: two-hour sessions with out instructor as well as an hour a day at home. I'll post pictures from the event once they go live on my Appearances page.

Happy Anniversary Carmella and Mike Tresca!

A big Happy Anniversary to my parents, who just celebrated 35 years together on Flag Day (Tuesday, June 14)! On that same day, three baby bunnies were spotted in a burrow outside my parents' house. They're so durned cute that we just had to share!

When the Past Comes Back...

One of the kids I knew in high school, who lived just down the street from me, died at a very early age. We never found out how he died, but it was quick. His name was Andy.

Andy used to always hang out with a local parish priest, Father Brian McKeon. I went to confession with Father McKeon, he was there at our Catholic retreat, he even coachd my brother's hockey team.

Father Brian was a guiding light for me in my difficult teenage years. It was he who told me playing Dungeons & Dragons wasn't evil. He asked me, "Do you think it's wrong in your heart?" No, I replied. "Then there's nothing wrong with it."

I'll never forget when we were at the retreat, we took a moment of slience to speak to Jesus. I asked Father Brian what Jesus shared with him and he said, "his heart." Wow! Jesus said the same thing to me too. Nothing like having a spiritual experience in common with a priest, right?

Well, it turns out Father Brian wasn't quite as spiritual as I believed. Read here for more details.

I made the connection between Andy and McKeon years later. Worse, not only was Andy being abused, McKeon abused his younger brother after his death. You can read an article about Andy's father (who chose not to be identified in the article) here.

Thankfully, McKeon never abused me. But I looked to him as a role-model and much of what I believed he stood for must now be viewed in a different light. Nothing like having a child molester tell you about right and wrong.
