Symbolism Drawn from Computing
Technology
The following items could represent computing technology of the late
20th and early 21st century:
- Neo
- Neo could be argued a couple of different ways. He could be simply
what he was at the beginning of the first movie -- a hacker. His tactics
and ability to manipulate the Matrix resemble that of a hacker entering
someone's network. Alternately, Neo could be viewed as a virus, infecting
the Matrix with his reality.
- The Oracle
- The Oracle could represent two current technologies. First, the Oracle
could be simply as her name/title implies: an Oracle database. Or simply
just a database. The other possibility is that the Oracle, in her wisdom
and decision-making, could be business intelligence software (e.g.,
Business Objects), of which Oracle is a major manufacturer.
- Seraph
- Seraph clearly represents a firewall. His fight with Neo could be
considered to be CHAP authentication, which is a challenge-response
system. Seraph challenges, Neo responds by fighting back. Upon authentication,
Seraph permits his traffic to a protected zone where the Oracle is hidden,
allowing him a brief visit. When his time with her ends, this could
represent a session time-out.
- The Keymaker
- The Keymaker seems most likely to be a key generator such as warez
fanatics constantly create to illegally break software. The Keymaker's
ability to create keys for almost anything within the Matrix (remember,
everything is software) clearly resembles a key generator, name not
withstanding.
