Biography For the family of George C. Raterman and Jennie Barga
GEORGE CLEMENS RATERMANN was born on 23 January 1888 in Berlin, McLean Township, Shelby County, Ohio. His parents were John Bernard Raterman and Catherine Lauterbur. He grew up by trade as a self-employed carpenter. He married JENNIE ADELINE BARGA on 24 Sept 1912 in Fort Loramie, Shelby County, Ohio. She was born on 15 August 1893 in Lima, Allen County, Ohio to Julius Abraham Barga and Mary Ann Alexander. They were married at St. Michael’s church on a Tuesday morning (which by today’s standards is unusual), then they went back to the bride’s parents house for a dinner. At the time of their marriage, she was a telephone operator. Sometime between 1913 and 1915, they moved to St. Johns Avenue in Lima Ohio, where he worked as a machinist/laborer at Lima Locomotive. Then about 1918, they moved back to Fort Loramie, where he became employed as a laborer at a Minster Foundry. By the time their fourth child George was born, the family was living on Walnut Street in Fort Loramie Village. Jennie had anemia real bad and after George was born, she was real sick for a long time. The oldest daughter, Ruth, had to take care of the 3 boys because her Mom was so sick all the time. In these days, they would ring the bell when someone died. One day, not too long after George Jr. was born, the bell was rung. George Sr. was a janitor at the school at the time and he ran from school all the way to Loramie because he thought his wife had died. While Ruth was taking care of George, she had to help him get dressed. In those days the boys wore a dress and when they reached a certain age, they would get to wear pants. So Ruth tried to dress George in pants, but he was so bowl-legged that they couldn't get the pants on him. So Mom (Jennie), told Ruth to put the dress back on him. Then about 1932 George changed jobs to become a custodian for the Fort Loramie School, where he stayed for about 15 years until 1947. From 1947 until his death in 1949 he went to Sidney to work at the Stolle Corp. It appears they lived in Fort Loramie for the rest of their lives, although at different addresses: Walnut Street, West Park Street, East Park Street and Elm Street. They had 9 children, but since most are still living, I am withholding info on the children. Jennie died on 11 Sept 1948 in Fort Loramie, Ohio of cancer of the small intestine. George died on 01 August 1949 in Fort Loramie, Shelby County, Ohio of stomach cancer. They are both buried at the New St. Michael’s Cemetery in Fort Loramie, Ohio.
