There is a possible listing
for William in Stephentown, Albany County, New York. |
see William's sources. |
William and family lived in Scituate from at least the time
of marriage in 1759 up until about 1779. I've noted where Scituate is on
the map below.
In 1779, they went to Pownal, Bennington County, Vermont.
They would have gone up into the far northwest corner of Massachusetts, a
distance of roughly 160 miles. Pownal was located at the corner where
Massachusetts, Vermont and New York meet. If you look at the map below from
1790, you'll see that Pownal is right on the edge between Bennington County
Vermont and Albany County New York. These 2 maps are not to the same scale, but
you can see where they fit together. There were apparently many border battles
between New York and Vermont, with New York relinquishing all claims to Vermont
in 1791.
You will note the close proximity of Pownal to Petersburg.
And in Stephenstown, I found a possible listing for William Gallop in the 1790
census. So it is quite possible that William and family did in fact move
to Petersburg/Stephentown. And that is also quite possibly the place where
William died, although no records to substantiate that have been found yet.
