USHA Instructor Clinics Dear fellow handball enthusiast: I NEED YOUR HELP. As you may recall, I wrote in January about having the USHA’s Youth Development Director, Gary Cruz, come to town for the purpose of holding instructor clinics. Plans have been firmed up and Gary is scheduled to be here from May 11-13, 2006. I will follow up with further details in a few weeks. PLEASE give me 10-15 minutes of your time. I have been attempting to access a database of Physical Education Teachers and Instructors in the SE Michigan area. This information has been hard to come by. I figure that if each one of you were to access the Web page for your local school district, you get easily get this information and then forward it to me. I’m not asking anyone to make any phone calls or invites; I will take care of that. So, visit the web page for your local school district. Drill down to obtain information about personnel at the elementary, middle and high schools. Specifically, I want you to provide contact information for the PHYS. ED TEACHERS at the Elementary, Middle and High Schools and perhaps the principal of the school. Ideally, you would provide the following: We all know that the future of handball is in jeopardy. This is an opportunity for everyone to do just a little to help stop the bleeding!! Your prompt response would be appreciated as I would like to get the invites out in about 2 weeks or less. Thanks for your time.

Survey Results Thank you for your response to my recent survey. As you may recall, I asked that you rank 5 topics relating to handball. Here are the results based upon 65 responses. I attended my first USHA Board of Directors meeting recently. What I found was a talented and hard working group dedicated to the game we all love. The meeting was held over 2 1/2 days and was very productive. Look for the minutes of the meeting in the upcoming issue of the magazine. The most enlightening thing for me was learning that the USHA now has specific resources to help with player development. There are two individuals employed by the USHA on a full time basis that are available to help. Gary Cruz is the Director of Player Development. Gary will visit your facility for the purpose of holding a clinic. The clinic is designed to instruct handball players, Phys Ed Teachers, YMCA personnel, etc. Gary gives about a one hour clinic which gives the attendees some basic tools for teaching the game to entry level players. Gary has had good response from elementary and middle school teachers. Gary is also pretty good at “selling” handball to schools, park and recreation departments and youth service groups. He needs a contact in the local handball community who has access to someone in local politics, local school administration, and local community services that can help initiate or implement handball into their system. According to Gary, this ‘networking’ may be our biggest asset when it comes to getting into facilities. Ian Kelley is the other USHA employee involved with player development. Ian will meet with college students and provide them with equipment and documentation to help them set up a handball club at the College or University level. All that is needed to start a club sport is 5 interested players. I will be contacting some people in the South East Michigan area for the purpose of scheduling a visit by both Gary and Ian. I challenge all of you to get involved in your area. I'm sure you all know of a club, YMCA, school, etc. where a visit could be scheduled for Gary and Ian. Thanks again for your support and your love of the game.
