Biography For the family of Ignace Monnin and Louisa Didier
Ignace Monnin was born on 24 November 1844 in Develier, the Canton of Berne (since 1978, is now the Canton of Jura), Swtizerland. He was the son of (Jean) George Monnin and Marie Anne Chevre. The family lived in Develier until 1953, when they emigrated to the United States. The entire family left Le Havre France and landed at New York on 13 Sept 1853 aboard the ship "H. Goodwin". The family made their way to Dayton Ohio and by 1855 were in Shelby County, Ohio. By early 1856, both George and Marie Anne had died. The older children looked after the youngest children. On the 1860 census, brother Frank, sister Mary, Mary's 2 children, and their brothers Ignace and Joseph are all living together in Loramie Township, Shelby County, Ohio.
Louisa Didier was born on 22 July 1848 in Teaufont, France. She was the daughter of Nicholas Didier and Mary Monnier. The family emigrated to the United States and wound up in Shelby County Ohio. Her family lived very close to the Monnins. Louisa and Ignace married on Ignace's birthday - on 24 November 1868 in Shelby County.
By the 1870 census, Ignace and Louisa are living in Loramie Township (post office address: Houston). They are living with their first child John, age 7 months. Also living in their household is Ignace's youngest brother Joseph.
On 04 November 1876, Ignace became a citizen of the United States, through the naturalization process. His naturalization record is recorded at the Shelby County Ohio Probate Court records. Under the Naturalization Act of February 10, 1855, Louisa instantly became a US citizen at the moment the judge's order naturalized her immigrant husband, Ignace.
By the 1880 census, Ignace and Louisa are still living in Loramie Township with 6 children: John age 10, Nicholas age 8, Mary age 6, Ignace Jr. age 4, Frank age 2 and Ellen age 1 month. Ignace was a farmer. By the 1900 census, Ignace and Louisa are living at their farm in Loramie Township with 7 of their children. Stephen age 22, Ellen age 20, Josephine age 18, Charles age 16, Christine age 14, Dona age 8 and Raymond age 7.
On 29 January 1901, Louisa died at age 52. So by the 1910 census, Ignace was listed as widowed, but still living at his farm in Loramie Township. But he died on 12 December 1911 at his farm at age 67 of pulmonary tuberculosis. Both Ignace and Louise are buried at the St. Remy Church Cemetery in Russia, Shelby County, Ohio.
I have just begun research on this family and at the present time, do not have any other information, other then what is presented above. There are 12 known children, all surnamed MONNIN:
