Biography

For the family of Frances Maurer and Julia Montre

FRANCES A. MAURER was born in 1831 in France. His parents are unknown at this time. His birthdate was taken from his tombstone.

JULIA MONTRE was born on 18 Aug 1838 in France. She was the daughter of Louis Montre and Mary Jane Haguit

I do not have any information on their immigration at this time. The only clue I have is that on the 1900 census records for Julia, she indicates that her date of immigration was 1841. The confusing part is that on Julia's 1910 census record, her date of immigration is listed as 1861.

They were married probably around 1864, which is an estimate based on the birth date of their first child. I have not located a copy of the marriage record yet.

The first record I have located for them after their marriage is the 1870 federal population census. They are living in Wapakoneta, Auglaize County, Ohio. Living in their household are Francis and Julia along with their children Albert age 5, Albertine age 2 and Mary age 6/12. His occupation is listed as harness & sadler. They have a real estate value of $1000 and a personal property value of $100, which is lower than most of their neighbors.

Sometime between 1870 and 1880, they must have moved, because they are found listed on the 1880 federal population census schedule in Cynthian Township, Shelby County Ohio. "FA. Mourer"and wife, "July" are listed, along with children Albert age 12 and Mary age 10. His occupation is listed as "makes hammers".  I believe that this census is incorrect, as far as what children are listed. We know from later census records that Julia was the mother of 3 children, 2 of whom were still living in 1900, which means one died. We know from cemetery records that Albert died in 1880. From the birthdates listed, it would make more sense if the children in the household were Albertine age 12 and Mary age 10. Albert had probably died by the time of the census. These dates fit perfectly with the dates of the 1870 census.

In 1886, Frances or FA Maurer died. I do not have a death record for him, but know of his death from his tombstone in the St. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Newport, Shelby County, Ohio.

On the 1900 and 1910 census schedules, Julia is living with her daughter Albertine in their house in Cynthian Township, Shelby County, Ohio.  On 23 October 1915, Julia died in her daughter's house in Cynthian Township. The cause of death is hard to read, but I believe it says "hephatic seforis" with contributory cause of cirrhosis of liver. I think this means that she had hepatitis, which can cause cirrhosis of the liver.

I have just begun research on this family and at the present time, do not have any other documents on them. There are 3 known children, all surnamed DELAET:
