Biography

For the family of George Marchal and Mary R. Peltier

GEORGE MARCHAL was born on 27 April 1855 in Darke County, Ohio. He was the son of Nicholas Marchal Jr. and Mary Ann George.  He married MARY R. PELTIER, daughter of Louis Peltier and Mary ( -- ? -- ) on 11 Nov 1879 at Shelby County, Ohio. Mary was born on 02 November 1858 in Loramie Township, Shelby County, Ohio.

I do not have records at this time to indicate how they met and came to know one another. The Peltier family was in Loramie Township, Shelby County, Ohio from the 1850s through the 1880 federal census. The Marchal family was in Wayne Township, Darke County Ohio from the 1840s until the 1870 federal census. By the 1880 federal census, they had moved to Russia, Shelby County, Ohio. I can only surmise that by the Marchal family moving into Shelby County, that George and Mary had the opportunity to meet and eventually marry.

George and Mary appeared on the federal population census on 12 June 1880 at Patterson Township, Darke County, Ohio. It's curious to me that they were in Darke County, since both of their families were currently living in Shelby County. Perhaps George inherited land in Darke County or perhaps he just wanted to live there, since that was where he was born and grew up. George's occupation is listed as "farmer". They are both listed as having been married within the census records, which is a confirmation of the marriage record that we have.

George and Mary appeared on the federal population census schedule on 28 June 1900 at Loramie Township, Shelby County, Ohio. George's occupation is listed as "farmer". Since the 1890 federal census for Ohio was destroyed, there is quite a gap of records between the 1880 and 1900 censuses. By the 1900 census, they are listed with 5 children, the oldest of whom was 18 and the youngest was 9. The oldest daughter, Elizabeth, had been born after the 1880 census and was married by the 1900 census, so she does not appear on either of these census schedules with her parents. Sometime between 1880 and 1900, the family moved back to Shelby County. Checking land records might give us a clue here as to why they moved.

George and Mary appeared on the federal population census schedule on 26 Apr 1910 at Loramie Township, Shelby County, Ohio. They are listed as having been married 30 years and that Mary was the mother of 7 children, 6 living. By this time, only their youngest living son, Wilfred, age 21 was living with his parents. George's occupation is listed as "own income", which I believe means that he was retired by this point. But his son Wilfred's occupation is listed as farmer, which would suggest that he had probably taken over the day to day operations of the farm.

George and Mary appeared on the federal population census schedule on 09 Jan 1920 at Loramie Township, Shelby County, Ohio. His occupation is "none", which again suggests that he was retired. They are listed as having owned their own farm.

George and Mary appeared on the federal population census schedule on 21 Apr 1930 at Loramie Township, Shelby County, Ohio. Again his occupation is listed as "none" and they are listed as having owned their own property. George is listed as having been married at age 24 and Mary is listed as having been married at age 21.

George died on 10 July 1930 at Loramie Township, Shelby County, Ohio. The cause of death was listed as tuberculosis meningitis, which had lasted 3 weeks. Mary lived 3 more years after George's death and she died on 17 May 1933 at Loramie Township, Shelby County, Ohio. She died of a cerebral embolism, which had lasted 3 days. They were both buried at the St. Remy Cemetery in Russia, Ohio.

I have just begun research on this family and at the present time, do not have a lot of source information on them. There are 7 known children, all surname MARCHAL:

(1)

ELIZABETH M b 31 Dec 1880 d 29 Dec 1956

(2)

(JOHN) HENRY  b 22 May 1882 d 23 Sept 1937

(3)

CLARA M b 19 Apr 1884 d 01 Jan 1959

(4)

EMMA b. 03 Mar 1886 d 03 Dec 1941

(5)

WILFRED LEWIS b 07 Dec 1888 d 20 Feb 1967
(6) MARGARET b Mar 1891 d
(7) UNKNOWN b ca 1893 d ca 1893

(Note on this last child: According to the 1900 federal census, Mary R. Marchal was listed as the mother of 7 children, 6 living. All the other known children are 2 years apart and there is no room between them for another child. Therefore I assumed this last child died at birth and was probably her last child.)
