Biography For the family of Edward Edmunds Sheldon and Minerva Francis Riggs
EDWARD EDMUNDS SHELDON was born on 13 Jan 1836 in Lodi Township, Washtenaw County, Michigan, the son of Newton Sheldon and Susannah Edmunds. MINERVA FRANCIS RIGGS was born on 05 Apr 1840 in New York, the daughter of Eli Riggs and Mary Soule. Edward and Minerva married on 25 Sept 1857 in Washtenaw County, Michigan. At the time of their marriage, he was a resident of Lodi township and she was a resident of Saline township in Washtenaw County, Michigan.
They next show up in the 1860 federal census for Lodi township. He’s listed as a farmer with a value of real estate of $ 2,000 and a value of personal property of $ 500. Interestingly enough, she’s listed as a housekeeper, but with a value of personal property of $ 700. (Her father, had just died in late 1859, so perhaps that’s why they listed her personal property separately.) Their only child, a daughter, Mary Lillian Sheldon, was born 13 Jan 1864, presumably in Lodi Township.
In the 1870 federal census, they are found in Lodi Township again. His occupation is a farmer with a real estate value of $ 8000 and personal property value of $ 2500. They haven’t been located yet in the 1880 census. In Jan. 1883, Edward’s father, Newton Sheldon died. Edward was appointed administrator of the estate and his residence at that time was listed as Jackson County. So therefore, sometime between 1870 and 1883, Edward and Mary moved to Jackson County, Michigan.
Edward is listed in the Jackson Michigan directories for 1887 to 1905, living at 412 First Street. Many times he had no occupation listed, but a couple times he was listed as “collector”. In 1900/1901 directory, he is listed as the President of the Jackson Creamery Company. His occupation as listed on the 1900 federal census is “capitalist”. On 01 Jun 1893, Minerva died at her home of cancer.
Sometime after 1905, he moved to Ann Arbor to live with his sister, Mary Isbell. Because in 1910 he is listed on the federal census with this family.
In 1920 he is found living with his daughter and son in law Mary and Fred Crego at their home at 709 Hill Street, Saginaw City, Saginaw County, Michigan. His occupation is listed as retired.
Edward died on 11 May 1920 at Saginaw, Saginaw County, Michigan of cerebral paralysis. Both Edward and Minerva are buried in Forest Hill Cemetery at Ann Arbor, Michigan.
