Discussion of

William Gallop possible parents

It is not known, at this point, who William Gallop's parents might be.  Certain facts and items about this are:

1)  The only facts about Williams birth is that he was born between 1727 and 1742.

  • This is based on the 1777 Rhode Island military census that he was between the ages of 16 and 50 (therefore born 1727 - 1761).

  • And also that he was between 16 and 50 years old in 1758, during the French and Indian wars. (therefore born 1708 - 1742).

  • Therefore, he was born between 1727 and 1742.

2) At this point, we do not know where he was born.

3)  The other piece of information that we have is that as to his early childhood, is that William and Hannah were married on May 15, 1759 in Scituate, Rhode Island.  So it is likely that his parents were in Scituate at that time.

4)  On the 1760 Scituate tax list, there is listed:  Joseph Gallop, Joseph Jr Gallop, Thomas Gallop and William Gallop.

5)  Joseph Gallop, Sr. died intestate in 1761 and administration was granted to son Thomas.  The probate records do not name Joseph's heirs.   Therefore this is not evidence that William was a son of Joseph.  It was customary at the time to grant administration to the eldest son, which means that Thomas was probably the eldest son.

6)  Rhode Island records disclose that Joseph Jr and William Gallop were not "eldest sons" they they were admitted as freemen of Scituate.

In conclusion:

So it is still a mystery as to who William's parents might be.  Although a definite possibility would be Joseph.
