William Gallop military service
French and Indian War service:
The only source so far for William Gallop's service in the French and Indian Wars was obtained from Louise G. Walker's book entitled, "William Gallop, Revolutionary Soldier", published in 1973. In this book on page 1, she indicates "William Gallop served in the 1758 expedition from Scituate, Rhode Island, during the French and Indian Wars." She indicates in another part of the book that he was between 16 and 50 years old in 1758. In this book, she does not indicate the source of this information.
American Revolution War service:
The main source for William Gallop/Gallup's military service came from Louise G. Walker's book entitled, "William Gallop, Revolutionary Soldier", published in 1973. According to her work, William served two times in the Revolution:
1) June 14, 1778 - March 16, 1779: He served as Private in Captain John Carr's Company, Colonel Archibald Crary's Regiment. He would have been living in Scituate Rhode Island at the time. Sources listed for this information: - Arnold's Vital Records of Rhode Island, Volume 12, page 166; This record indicated William Gallop, private of Col. Crary's regiment in 1776. His pay due was 15 pounds, 15, 8. It indicates the record type as "pensioned" and the source as Cowell's Spirit of 76. - Cowell's Spirit of 76, page 103;
2) November 1781: Served in Colonel Ebenezer Walbridge's Regiment, as tarried with Captain Eli Noble (of Pownal) of Castleton. William was living in Pownal Vermont during this time. Sources listed for this information: - Vermont revolutionary rolls, page 522.
It appears that William never received a federal pension for his service. Most likely because he died before that was enacted.
Much work remains to be done on his military service. a) find original copies of the above-mentioned sources: b) find service records for William; c) look for more information on the above-mentioned regiments
