Nathaniel Gallop military service

 

 

 

American Revolution War service:

 

I received Nathaniel's pension application from the National Archives.  I hand-numbered it in the order that I received it, so that I could translate the documents and easily locate portions when needed.  So the page numbers below refer to my hand numbering.  Below is a recap of his pension application that I put together in chronological order:

Served one month and nine days.  Went from Pownal Vermont to Fort Castleton Vermont.  Served under Captain (Parks?), Colonel Samuel Robison and General Safford of the Vermont Militia.

He stood a minuteman during the time he was ordered to Fort Castleton three times and served 4 days each time (12 days total)

Jacob Cummings of Clarence, Erie County, New York deposed that he served with Nathaniel in Oct 1780 at Fort Castleton Vermont in company commanded by Captain Parker under Colonel Samuel Robison and General Safford of the Vermont Militia.

Letter from the State of Vermont Treasurer’s Office, claiming that he inspected all the [military pay] roles in this office and did not find Nathaniel Gallop’s name on them.

Nathaniel never made a pension application before this because he always thought it would be necessary to prove his services by a witness.   Just before this time, Mr. Jacob Cummings moved into his area and Nathaniel asked him to prove his services and then immediately made his application.

Letter from Nathaniel’s attorney to the pension office enclosing Nathaniel’s additional affidavit and letter from Treasury of Vermont.  He states that since Nathaniel was serving monthly and they served under officers chosen by them different companies and from this fact it is presumed that the names were never made a mention of.
