Places of Interest For the family of Nathaniel Gallop and Anna York
Nathaniel was born in Scituate Rhode Island on 23 September 1760. I've noted it on the map below.
After they moved from Rhode Island, they went to Pownal, Bennington County, Vermont. They would have gone up into the far northwest corner of Massachusetts, a distance of roughly 160 miles. Pownal was located at the corner where Massachusetts, Vermont and New York meet. If you look at the map below from 1790, you'll see that Pownal is right on the edge between Bennington County Vermont and Albany County New York. These 2 maps are not to the same scale, but you can see where they fit together. There were apparently many border battles between New York and Vermont, with New York relinquishing all claims to Vermont in 1791.
Note the residences of Nathaniel and family as marked on the New York map below. You will note that the Gallups followed the westward migration trend. Some of their descendants took a boat from Buffalo in Erie County to Detroit Michigan. From there they migrated to southeastern Michigan. Note where Clarence is located. It was originally in Niagara County, but in 1821 became part of Erie County. This is reflected in the census records.
