BIOGRAPHY

For the family of James H. Howell and Catherine (--?--)

JAMES H. HOWELL was born about 1827 in Tennessee, parents not identified at this time.  This date was calculated from census research.

CATHERINE  was born about 1835 in Virginia, parents not identified at this time.  This date was calculated from census research.

They were married sometime before 1857, as calculated by the birthdate of their first son.  The first record I have found of this family is the 1870 federal census.  They are living in the post office area of Flarance, civil district #6, Rutherford County, Tennessee.   He is listed as a farm hand, along with his wife and 5 children.  Living in the house immediately next door to them is a “(T or G) Howell with his family.  Could they be related?  Perhaps brothers?

They appear again on the 1880 federal census as living in Hickory Grove, civil district #19, Gibson County, Tennessee.   James is again listed as a farmer.   There are a couple of interesting items on this census.  The first is that Catherine, at age 45, cannot read or write.  Their son Thomas, cannot write at age 17.   Their daughter Amanda at age 14 attended school.  Their son Albert at age 12 cannot read or write.  I believe it was very common at this time to keep kids home to do the farmwork and many times the kids were not able to go to school.

I have no other information about this family at this point in time.  Known children, all surname HOWELL:
