BIOGRAPHY

For the family of George Franklin Howell & Emma Clay West

GEORGE FRANKLIN HOWELL  was born in June 1859 in Tennessee.  His parents have not yet been identified.  EMMA CLAY WEST was born on 16 December 1869 in Kentucky, the daughter of John Henry West and Sarah Elizabeth Haley.   George F. and Emma were married in Gibson County, Tennessee on 09 March 1884. On the marriage certificate and census records, George Franklin was listed as “Frank”.  On the funeral notice, he was referred to as “G.F.

They should be in the 1891 Tennessee state census, however I have not located them yet.  The family shows up next in the 1900 Federal census living in the 7th Civil District in Dyer County, Tennessee. “Frank” is listed as a farmer who can read and write and rents his home.    So sometime between their marriage in 1884 and this 1900 census, they moved from Gibson County to Dyer County.  These counties are adjacent to one another in Tennessee, Dyer County being west of Gibson County.

They are again found in the 1910 Federal census living in the 6th Civil District in Dyer County, Tennessee.  “Frank” is listed as a laborer on a poultry farm.  He’s listed again as being able to read and write and owns his own house, free of mortgage.  They had five children, born in either Gibson or Dyer County but mostly raised in Dyer County:  All surnamed HOWELL:

Frank died on 25 April 1911 at age 52 in Newbern, Dyer County, Tennessee.  Family tradition says that he died of a heart attack suffered while plowing a field.  He had a funeral at the gravesite on the next day and was buried in the “City Cemetery”.  (Which I understand to be the Fairview Cemetery in Newbern).

Emma remarried 7 years later on 17 December 1918 in Dyer County to James Washington Scott.  They apparently moved back to Gibson County Tennesse, because they are found there for the 1920 federal census, living in the 8th district.  He is listed as a farmer, age 58, born in Tennessee.  Living in their house with them is Emma’s son Elbert Howell age 18, a son in law Marion Dycus age 30,and a son (grandson?) James W. Dycus age 10.  Emma was most remembered by her grandchildren as “Mamie Scott”.

Emma died on 04 January 1950 at the home of her son, Elbert, in Newbern, Dyer County, Tennessee.  Family tradition says that she died of a stroke.  When she died at age 80, she left 5 children, 27 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren.  We know that Emma was buried at the Fairview Cemetery in Newbern and we can find the tombstone.  However, none can be located for either of her husbands.  Family tradition says that she was buried in between her husbands.
