BIOGRAPHY For the family of Joseph Harrison and Martha Peel
JOSEPH HARRISON was born on 02 Dec 1823 in North Carolina. His parents are not known yet. MARTHA PEEL was born on 11 Jan 1825 in North Carolina. I believe that her parents are William and Elizabeth Peel (this is solely based on the fact of the 1850 census in which Joseph and Martha were living next door to William & Elizabeth and a William R. Peel was living in Joseph & Martha's household.) Joseph and Martha were married on 01 September 1845 in Gibson County Tennessee, according to their great grandson. This date makes sense, based on the birthdate of their first child. In 1850, they are living in district 17 in Gibson County, Tennessee. Joseph Harrison is listed as a farmer, born in Tennessee. In his household are Martha born North Carolina, Mary age 4, Louisa age 2, and William age 6 months. Also in the household is William R. Peel age 31 born in North Carolina. They are living next door to the family of William and Elizabeth Peel, which I believe are Martha's parents. In 1860, they are living in district 14 in Gibson County, Tennessee. Joe Harrison is listed as a farmer, born in Tennessee. In the household are his wife Martha, Mary age 15, William age 13, John age 10, Emiline age 7, and Martha age 2. By 1870 they had moved to Dyer County living in the post office district of Newbern. Then Joseph died on 27 Feb 1875, probably in Dyer County, Tennessee. Martha shows up on the 1880 federal census. She is living in Dyer County, Tennessee with 8 of her 10 children. She died on 29 Oct 1891, probably in Dyer County. Both Joseph and Martha are buried in the Hurricane Hill Cemetery, in Dyer County, Tennessee. They had ten children, all born and raised in Tennessee:
10th Child: Lula Ellen Thompson Bunn A story from her grandson Fred Thompson: This is a good story about my Grandmother Bunn. My grandmother Bunn was living with us in Memphis Tennessee around the year 1923. I recall one night a house about 2 blocks away caught on fire and was lighting up the night sky. Grandma got so excited and nervous that she went in the kitchen and started pumpking water and letting it run down the sink. (We didn't have running water at that time).
Another story from her grandson Fred Thompson: This story has come down through the family. Grandmother was a nervous type of person and was really terrified of any thunder cloud. The story goes that when my Dad was a young boy they lived in Newbern Tennessee. Grandmother had a storm cellar near their home. Each time a dark cloud would show up Grandmother would run to the storm cellar and she would scream!! Willie Mack - Willie Mack come get in this hole in the ground before the good Lord strikes you down. Willie Mack being a good little boy would come running. But in a few years when Willie Mack was older, Grandmother would call him, but Willie Mack would not come. He would say (aww ma) I'm not getting down in that hole any more.
From Fred Thompson: I
recall one time while we were living on the farm near Big Sandy Tennessee
Grandmother was living with us. One day a thunderstorm was in
progress and Grandmother was going through the house hollering, screaming and
praying. She went into the front room and seen Frances my sister reading a
True Story magazine. She told her to put that magazine down before the
good Lord strikes all of us down. About that time Dad comes in the house
and he told Grandmother to sit down and (shut up)---. (She did). Copyright 2003
