The 17th century was an important turning point in jewelry design. This period saw little interest in literary, religious, or historical references in jewelry motifs. The emerging styles served mainly decorative purposes, with settings that were symmetrical, providing frameworks of simple shapes to highlight gemstones. Affluent patrons were able to commission pieces based on designs featured in portfolios.

The Museum houses many of these jewelry design portfolios, which include works by the respected Giles L'Egare. The Museum of Fine Arts Boston's gift selection is modeled on designs in these portfolios.
