Traveling on British Airways turned out to be the most pleasant flight experience I've ever experienced. The food was good (okay, not great, but palatable), the movies were free (and good! X-men and Wallace & Grommet), and they even give you a handy little plastic bag containing a toothbrush, toothpaste, socks (!), and a mask. That mask became my best friend, although neither of us got much sleep (and we were in the corner seats too!). We were far too excited. The best part of the flight was the food. Airline food is often made fun of, but this was actually good. Not only did they serve dinner soon after takeoff, but breakfast was also served before we landed. Complete with tea (Amber's favorite part of England is that one can get tea with any meal). We land in London Gatwick, which was a dream-like experience. It is 6AM local time, but only 12AM to us. You're in a foreign country with no sleep and lots of stores all around. All I remember is the irritating insistence that we had to show our "flight card" to everyone in order to buy anything at the store, since everything was "duty free" (tax free). Near as I could tell, EVERYTHING was duty free, including all the merchandise in Cornwall. Big deal. After arriving in Gatwick and doing a little shopping, it's time to board the flight to Cornwall. Even though this is only a 2 hour flight on a small propeller plane, guess what? We get served breakfast again! There is a moment or two when the turbulance gets very bumpy. The pilot tells us this is due to high winds. Instead of stopping at Plymouth, the plane must bypass Plymouth and land at Newquay (our final destination). Once on the ground we manage to find a cabbie who knows how to find our cottage. We are both looking forward to a hot shower and a change of clothes.. | |
