Some hybrid facts:

Approximately 70% of hybrids are female, due to Vlad syndrome disproportionately striking male fetii.

They are stronger and have better stamina and faster reflexes than normal humans. They also tend to score very high on intelligence tests, although scientists have stopped short of actually saying they're smarter than humans. (wusses.)

All hybrids have at least a low-grade sensitivity to magic, and some can be magically powerful. Their blood is more powerful than humans', though most vampires are unaware of this due to vampire society's indifference to hybrids. (This is changing, however, and one can foresee a fashion among vampires to seek out hybrids as pommes, and possibly lovers as well.)

Hybrids age slower than humans once reaching adulthood, and have a lifespan roughly twice that of humans, about 150 years.

Hybrids tend to (mostly jokingly) classify themselves by their vampire parent's bloodline. By far the largest group of hybrids are the "Mouries", descendants of Belle Morte's line. Anyone who has seen one of Belle's vampires will understand why they make more babies than other vampire bloodlines. ;-)

They can also inherit diluted versions of some of their vampire parents' needs, so "Mouries" tend to have higher libidos than humans or even other hybrids. All hybrids have higher appetites and protein requirements than humans of comparable size.

"Sibs"- half vampires whose non-vampire parent was something other than human- are welcomed among hybrids, though they're not considered hybrids themselves. Giovanni is a good example of this, and Sampson and his brothers sometimes attended hybrid conventions as well.

All hybrids are born with fangs, even though their bodies are no more suited to drink blood than humans' are. (i.e. more than a few ounces make them sick.) It's speculated that they like the taste of blood better than humans do, but that's not proven.

Hybrids are sensitive to silver, much like vampires and lycanthropes. Just touching it to their skin doesn't cause injury, but it does hurt, so hybrids rarely wear silver jewelry. The exception is earrings and other piercings, which have to be silver or the piercings will heal over. (Ouch!)

They are also sensitive to the sun, though not to the extent vampires are- they simply sunburn badly without protection, much like human albinos. Most hybrids routinely use sunscreen of SPF 50 or higher. Sunscreen companies love hybrids. :-)

Hybrids cannot contract lycanthropy, due to the fact they carry vampirism in their bloodstreams despite not actually being vampires. Whether a hybrid can be made a vampire is unknown.

Before Caden gave Mara his marks, no one knew whether hybrids could be made into human servants. The Vampire Council and many MotCs mostly ignored hybrids as irrelevant to true vampire interests, but this new knowledge may change that attitude.

Hybrids also have in-jokes, especially related to their bloodlines. Some "Mourie" in-jokes are:

"If you think I'm cute, you should see my dad"

"Never start a fight with a Mourie, because love conquers all."

Hybrid slang:

vads- vampire dads

sibs - half vampires who are not hybrids (for 'siblings'- not hybrids, but like us, related to us)

Mouries - Belle Morte's line (for "amour") The largest group of hybrids.

The Half and Half - the hybrid pride symbol, half full moon on night sky and half sun on daylight sky, cut on the diagonal. Symbolizes the hybrid being part daytime creature, part creature of the night.

powwow - informal gathering, hybrids only, frequently held in hotel rooms during hybrid conventions. Generally the time to share information and have discussions which hybrids prefer to keep amongst themselves.

Burners - religious anti-hybrid wingnuts, so named because they think hybrids and vampires should "burn"

Ratters - scientists who study hybrids and vampires (so named because they're usually looking for hybrid "lab rats")

plano - (pronounced PLAY-no) Plain ol' human (can be affectionate or insulting)- one who is not magic and has no ties to the metaphysical

lyke - lycanthrope
