Caden

Profile: Caden is about five hundred years old, a master vampire. Although he is very powerful, he initially has no animal to call and few preternatural skills other than the ability to cast fear as well as feeding off of it, abilities which he dislikes using because they remind him of the Dragon. He also has the power to heal, but can only heal small amounts and it requires great emotion on his part to work. One of his greatest ambitions is to be free of The Dragon's control forever.
Background: Emrys ap Kynan, fourth son of a Welsh lord, had no desire to be a vampire. However, his unusual skill in battle brought him to the Dragon's attention, and shortly after a battle her minions captured him. After being turned into a vampire and renamed Caden ("spirit of battle") to suit his new role, he was kept a slave in the Vampire Council court, not even allowed out until over a century had passed and all his human family were dead. Even after that he was rarely allowed to leave the court, and only in the company of the Dragon herself. She ensured that his reputation as well as the threat of her wrath kept others away from her new favorite, so he had very little company aside from the Dragon. Coming to St. Louis was a huge change for him in many ways.
Personality: To those who do not know him well, Caden seems cold and intimidating. However, like many vampires who have been ill-used by their "protectors", this hardness is only a shell he developed to protect himself. To the few he trusts and cares for, he is gentle, kind, and loving, with an unexpectedly quirky sense of humor. He is an extremely dangerous enemy, but a loyal and invaluable ally.

Cameron MacNamera

Profile: Normally cheerful and accepting of the peculiarities of Mara and the other Circus denizens, Cameron occasionally shows a temper, and she harbors a deep self-doubt due to her father's neglect. After moving out of the Circus and leaving for college, she found that after her years among the preternatural, the human world was no longer enough for her. Her subsequent decisions threatened to cause a rift between her and Mara.
Background: Her parents divorced when she was very young due to her father's drug problems. She was five when her mother went to work at the Circus of the Damned, and six when their house was flattened by a tornado. After the two were rescued, shaken but unhurt, from the basement of the ruined house, Jean-Claude invited them to live at the Circus. The situation worked well for all concerned, so they stayed and Cammie had the unique experience of growing up a human among preternatural beings.
Personality: Cheerful, outgoing, vivacious, and surprisingly well-adjusted. She and Mara are as close as sisters, and Cammie excels at teasing Mara out of her seriousness. But despite Cammie's carefree attitude, there is much more to her than the social butterfly, and only those closest to her realize how much more.

Giovanni Stregos

Age at first appearance: 48
Height/physical description: 6', slim but fit, dark mahogany-colored curly hair, 'sunlit' gold-tinged skin, gold and brown tricolor eyes. Often uses 'fairy glamour' to make himself appear more human, with tan skin and dark brown eyes.

Profile: Handsome, charming, and seductive, Giovanni has had many lovers but commits to none. Descended from a vampire of Belle Morte's on one side and fertility deities on the other, he has considerable powers and needs, mostly centering around sex. Since reaching adulthood he has had the ability to sense thoughts and feelings related to passion or desire, a useful survival trait since he has a need for passion rivaling that of many vampires of Belle's line. His first encounter with Mara resulted in a marked increase of power in each of them, including Giovanni's newfound ability to call storms. It remains to be seen what other powers may emerge from their union.
Background: Giovanni is part vampire, part sidhe, the result of a tryst between his father (a vampire of Nikolaos's kiss), and a Seelie sidhe. He was raised by his father, hidden away from other vampires for fear of Nikolaos learning of him, until the age of ten, when he was sent to live with his mother to get him out of harm's way. His father was killed shortly thereafter on Nikolaos's orders. The loss affected Giovanni far more deeply than he ever allows most people to see. It gives him some comfort to know that Jean-Claude, who was brought into Nikolaos' kiss to replace his father, was ultimately responsible for Nikolaos' death.
Personality: Giovanni's considerable need for passion ensures that he has a busy love life, though he does not usually get emotionally close with his bedmates. He never lies about his intentions, nor does he make promises he doesn't intend to keep. Most of his lovers are like him, content with an affair involving good sex and not much else. Mara's very different ways of dealing with her lovers, and his own tangled feelings regarding her, make him uneasy and put off-balance in their relationship. He sometimes shows an un-fey-like jealousy regarding Caden, though even he does not really understand why. He often uses his charm and seductiveness to hide uncertainty and deflect attention from things about himself that he does not want known.

Madeline MacNamera

Height/physical description: About 5'9", long blonde hair, brown eyes- not a fashion-model type, but attractive
Notable characteristics: Intelligence, a strong will but openminded and accepting, she has a fiery but not unreasonable temper.
First appearance: Friends with Fangs
Profile: Her first priority is her daughter Cameron, but she fusses over Mara nearly as much as her own daughter and worries over both girls, especially when Mara's powers began to emerge and complicate her life. She is not intimidated or bothered by the vampires and lycanthropes around her, and her spirited clashes with Asher have become legendary among Circus residents.
Background: Her youthful 'wild days' resulted in her marriage, but she soon realized her new husband cared more for his drugs than for her, and quickly divorced him. Despite getting no help from him, she managed to raise their daughter Cameron well until she applied for a job as day manager of the Circus of the Damned. When their house was destroyed the next year, she and Cameron moved into the Circus. It was initially only as a temporary measure, but they found a home there and decided to stay, to the delight of Mara and the other residents there.
Personality: Warm, intelligent, and no-nonsense, her open-mindedness and easy acceptance of the preternatural made her well-suited for her job, and she and Cameron soon became part of the 'family' at the Circus.

Marvelle Blake

Height/physical description: 5'6", very pale skin, curly waist-length black hair, deep sapphire blue eyes, curvy figure, looks like a shorter, female version of Jean-Claude.
Notable characteristics: Very dark blue eyes, very pale skin and black hair, fangs

Profile: Daughter of Anita Blake and Jean-Claude, she closely resembles her father, and her powers are very similar to his as well. She speaks fluent French and a small amount of Welsh, and is rapidly picking up Italian from Giovanni. (Italian being easier for a French speaker to learn than Welsh.) Born and trained to be a leader and protector, she is versed in vampire culture and political manuevering, and familiar with the customs and characteristics of many other preternatural beings, including lycanthropes.
Background: Raised in the Circus of the Damned since she was five, her father Jean-Claude and Asher did most of her parenting, aided by Jason, Nathaniel, and many of the other vampires and lycanthrope inhabitants of the Circus. She attended school from age twelve to midway through her sixteenth year, when she chose to complete her education via an accelerated internet course. She was kept carefully sheltered and had little interest even in dating, until Caden and Bobby both made their interest clear on the day of her sixteenth birthday party. She showed little sign of magical power as a child, and assumed that she had not inherited her parents' power until her first sexual encounter brought out her own succubus powers. She formed a magical bond with Caden when he saved her from the arduer, and they became lovers soon after that. Caden gave her the first two marks to save her life after she was shot by the Hybrid Murderer in Boston, thus making her his human servant.
Personality: Mara is intelligent and studious, and though she can have a quick temper, she is loving and fiercely loyal to those she cares for. She envies Cameron's extroverted personality and ability to make friends, not realizing that her own nature evokes great loyalty from the people around her. For much of her youth she struggled to accept that she will never be human, until her love affair with Caden helped her understand that she does have a place in the vampire world.
She has a soft heart for people in pain, more than she realizes, and as a result she attracts those in need of healing and is in turn drawn to them; it was perhaps this caring and perception that made her see more of Caden's nature than anyone else, resulting in her love for him. The trait surfaced even in childhood, when she befriended the ever-frightened Gil. The downsides are that it vastly complicates her life, and many of her 'strays' become deeply attached to her.
Her compassion for loneliness in others may be in part due to her own unclear position; even among hybrids she is unique, both for being the child of a Master Vampire and in being raised in a vampire court.

Nicholas Richmond

Notable characteristics: calm, good-natured though sometimes cynical demeanor which can switch in a moment to razor-sharp martial alertness

Profile: Ex-military, his time in a "safe house" left him with some issues and difficulties in trusting people. He is a powerful alpha werefox, which puts him in a unique position as the most powerful werefox in town. He is intelligent and has a good tactical mind, but prefers to do his job and leave the politics to others.
Background: Nicholas Richmond was a typical middle-American boy- parents, sisters, relatively untroubled life. Idealistic, he joined the military straight out of high school and had a distinguished career until the mission when his team were attacked by lycanthropes. Nicholas and the other survivors were sent to a military "safe house" (read: prison) for lycanthropes. They remained there with other ex-military lycanthropes for several years until the ACLU and other human rights groups won the court battles to have the prisons shut down and the occupants released. But Nicholas's family, primarily his father, could not handle his being a lycanthrope and rebuffed his attempts to contact them.
Bitter and disillusioned, Nicholas wandered from town to town searching for other werefoxes, mostly unsuccessfully. He was in a St. Louis jail after a bar fight with some local werewolves when Mara bailed him out and offered him a place with Jean-Claude's organization. Initially he stayed merely out of curiousity and for the money, but to his surprise, he found himself comfortable with the situation and chose to stay on.
Personality: Initially bitter and cynical, Nicholas slowly relaxed into his new home and role among the preternaturals of St. Louis, showing a more humourous and even flirtatious side as well as a strong code of honor. He is very loyal, especially to Mara and Jean-Claude, and has great respect for Caden as a warrior and leader. As a result of that loyalty, he is very dedicated to his job as security for Jean-Claude's kiss.

Robert Vespucci

Species: hybrid - half vampire, half human

Height/physical description: 5'10", blond and blue-eyed, handsome and fit.
Notable characteristics: Cheerful personality, fondness for playing sports, especially soccer

Profile: A quintessential all-American boy (only with fangs), he was popular in high school and had a great many friends, but was close to Cameron and Mara in particular. Exhibiting the typical traits of Belle's line hybrids, he dates a lot but rarely gets very close, especially after he was unable to gain the love of the one he most wanted.
Background: Bobby's father Robert was murdered before Bobby was born, leaving Bobby to be raised by his mother, Monica Vespucci. Jean-Claude, who felt responsible for them, ensured that the two lacked for nothing, and despite the lack of his father, Bobby had a relationship with the St. Louis kiss and with his fellow hybrid, Jean-Claude's daughter Mara. Bobby fell in love, or at least the adolescent version of such, with Mara when he was fourteen and she was twelve, but due to the difference in age and her seeming disinterest in the opposite sex, he waited until her sixteenth birthday to make his move. They tried dating, but she soon ended the relationship and he reacted badly. His feelings for her linger on for some time after.
Personality: A jock, but with a good mind and a genuinely sweet nature.

Notable characteristics: "boy-next-door" good looks, calm good-natured demeanor

Profile: Sampson is familiar with and adept at politics, though he does not enjoy them and prefers honesty and casual friendliness. Though he has an air of cheerful unconcern, he loves deeply and is very protective of his loved ones.
Background: Eldest son of a Master of the city and the last remaining siren, Sampson was born and raised in the equivalent of a royal court, and he is familiar with politics and intrigue. Though he thrives in that environment and lives up to all his responsibilities, he is lonely and longs to have someone he can trust and love without reservation. After Mara talked him through a difficult night, he came to believe she could be the loyal and loving mate he yearned for, if only he could convince her to see him as more than a friend. When she was nearly killed in Boston, Sampson decided to take the initiative: after she recovered, he traveled to St. Louis to visit Mara and propose their own 'alliance' as husband and wife. As he pointed out to her, they are ideally suited- both oldest children of Masters, accustomed to vampire custom and politics, and with similar powers and needs so they can understand each other better than anyone else could.
Though their marriage has been thus far prevented by Samuel's unexpected change of attitude, Sampson's one night as Mara's lover was enough for her power to establish a bond between them.
Personality: Normally calm, cheerful and with a diplomatic nature, but he can be frightening when something or someone finally pushes him too far. He has a fine sense of humor and enjoys trading witticisms with Mara, though he sometimes used their banter to disguise his deeper feelings for her.
