| TRANSPARENCY | U.N. quote-of-the-day by Hubert H. Humphrey. |
| TRANSPARENCY | Objectives for lesson 4. |
| TRANSPARENCY | The Secretaries General of the United Nations Organization. |
| POSTER | The United Nations (Secretariat, Sec. Council, Gen. Ass.). |
| LECTURE | All member countries of the U.N. have special U.N. ambassadors. These people sit in the General Assembly and on the special councils. The U.S. ambassador of course sits on the Security Council. While not many ambassadors gain a great stature, there are exceptions. The major one is George Bush, who went on to become President of the United States. Bush served as U.N. ambassador from 1971 - 1973. These people are nominated by the President, and they are confirmed by the Senate. The President may remove them at any time. Our current U.N. ambassador is Madeleine Albright, who was appointed by President Clinton in 1993. The U.N. ambassador has a direct line of communication to the President and is considered very valuable. |
| LECTURE | Where is the U.N. going? That’s a question everyone is asking. I believe that we will be seeing more peacemaking missions in troubled places around the world. We will see the Security Council grow to include Germany and Japan as permanent members, and we will see the Secretary General grow in power. As for U.S. involvement, we are either going to have to decide to become more involved, or we’ll have to pull out completely. I’ll leave with one thought: people can easily count the number of times the U.N. has failed to keep the peace, but no one knows how many times it has been successful because there aren’t any bodies to count. |
