Lesson: Lost At Sea Activity(prioritization)
OBJECTIVES:
Each student, given their notebook, will complete this activity on the left hand side of their book.
After the activity, students will have a greater knowledge of how they prioritize items and what that says about their personality.
Students will learn to identify short-term and long-term thinking skills.
PROCEDURE:
Take attendance & remider to make entry in agenda book
Pass out notebooks and ‘Lost at Sea’ worksheet
Divide students into small groups (3-5 people per table)
Explain scenario to the students (start ocean music recording) Explain they have 15 minutes to complete the exercise
Observe the groups and circulate to answer questions & explain items (i.e. explain what a sextant is...)
At the end of 15 minutes, take the group that finished first and put them into the life raft (wading pool).
Have the students at the other tables gather around the raft
Have the students in the pool list the first 5-7 items they ranked to take along and put them in the pool
Explain the use of each item, giving students a chance to explain first and tell what role they would play in a possible resuce
Remove everything from the pool and have students return to their seats before the bell
MATERIALS:
1 large wading pool
student worksheets
items listed on worksheet (attatched)
ocean music (tape/cd & player)
EVALUATION:
completion of worksheets
class participation
identification of items and their uses
agenda book entered
