Goal:
Students will learn about the process by which the President of the United States is elected, and in the process will learn about the different candidates and parties in the involved in the electoral process.

Objectives:
  1. Students will learn how to navigate the World Wide Web, and find sites through Webcrawler, Yahoo, Lycos, Excite, Galaxy and the Internet Catalog.
  2. Students will learn about at least three front running candidates from the two major parties (Democrat and Republican).
  3. Students will learn and name at least two other parties which have a candidate for President running.
  4. Students will learn and identify the platform of two major candidates, one from each major party (Democrat and Republican).

Activities:
  1. Using the WWW for information, explain the major ideas of the platforms of two major candidates, one from the Democratic and one from the Republican Party.
  2. Find a candidate who has served in Congress, and download and print out that candidate’s voting record.
  3. Find the homepages for two other political parties, and explain their platforms.
  4. Give a short bio of two candidates from two third parties (i.e. not the Democratic or Republican Party).
  5. Compile a list of candidates who have their own WWW sites, and list those sites. Also, state whether or not is an officially licensed site by the candidate. One per candidate.
  6. Compile a listing of how many electoral points each candidate has toward his or her party’s nomination (Democrat and Republican only).
  7. Compile a list of all candidates for President, and print out that list with pictures of the candidates (from the WWW) if possible.
  8. Download and print out the latest Time, USA Today or Gallup poll.
  9. Pick one candidate, and using all WWW material you can find on this person (pictures, movies, audio, etc...) make a Power Point, Hyper Studio or Astound presentation that includes a biography of the candidate, the candidate’s party affiliation, voting record (if available) and the candidate’s platform.
  10. Using Power Point, Hyper Studio or Astound, make a collage presentation of all the candidates you have come across during this assignment. Each candidate must have a picture (with their name underneath). No other media is required, but it is not discouraged either. Above all, be creative and have fun with it.
