Prior to 1959, few of us had heard the word "Sertoma"; Some in our community felt that, somehow, it was related to Kikthawenund, the Indian Chief who had the English name, "Chief Anderson". Since our city is named for him and many Native American words are used for locations and organizations in this area; it was easy to assume that "Sertoma" was a Native American word. It is not. So, what was the origin of the name?
SERTOMA is a clever contraction of the phrase "SERvice-TO - MAnkind", which is also the goal and purpose of our club. We are a service club. Our parent organization, Sertoma International, which was founded in Kansas City, KS, in 1912, grew at an ever increasing rate until the late fifties - at which time Sertoma became known as "the worlds fastest growing Service Club." Today, Sertoma members number 25,000-plus in hundreds of local clubs throughout the United States, in Canada and Mexico.
With direction from the international office, a small local group, recognizing the need ... and the opportunity, began our local organizational meetings in mid-July of 1959. The response to this new club with its strange sounding name was tremendous. Within six weeks of these original meetings, on August 22, 1959, we chartered our club with 80 good enthusiastic members ... and these members were to build Anderson into the No. 1 First Year club in all of Sertoma.
From our very first fund raiser, Sertoma has earned its reputation as a working club. Every year, Anderson Sertoma members devote hundreds of hours and raise thousands of dollars for organizations that aid the hearing impaired, at risk youth, the mentally retarded, the hungry and others who are in need of assistance. While spending these many hours, we are certain that every active Sertoma member will agree that we have received far more than we could ever give. Our rewards are satisfaction, fellowship and lasting friendships.
We are extremely proud of our club's accomplishments of the past. But for those who now carry on the activities of Sertoma, we recognize that the need and the opportunities for service are still as great as they were in 1959 when our Anderson Sertoma club was chartered!
These are organizations that provide the services upon which many in our community depend.
SERTOMA sponsors these:
This is where our energy is focused and where we spend the dollars we generate.
