Who shall as-cend Thy heaven-ly place,
Great God, and dwell be-fore Thy face?
The man who trusts the Sav-iour now,
And hum-bly walks with God be-low.
Whose hands are pure, whose heart is clean,
Whose lips still speak the thing they mean;
No slan-ders dwell up-on his tongue;
He hates to do his neigh-bour wrong.
Scarce will he trust an ill re-port,
Nor vents it to his neigh-bour's hurt:
Sin-ners of state he can des-pise,
But saints are hon-oured in his eyes.
Firm to his word he ev-er stood,
And al-ways makes his prom-ise good;
Nor dares to change the thing he swears,
What-ev-er pain or loss he bears.
He nev-er deals in brib-ing gold,
And mourns that jus-tice should be sold:
While oth-ers scorn and wrong the poor,
Sweet char-i-ty at-tends his door.
He loves his en-e-mies and prays
For those that curse him to his face;
And doth to all men still the same
That he would hope or wish from them.
Yet when his ho-liest works are done,
His soul de-pends on grace a-lone;
This is the man Thy face shall see,
And dwell for ev-er, Lord with Thee.
