Blest is the man whose heart can move
And melt with pit-y to the poor,
Whose soul, by sym-pa-thiz-ing love,
Feels what his fel-low-saints en-dure.
His heart con-trives for their re-lief
More good than his own hands can do;
He, in the time of gen-eral grief,
Shall find the Lord has mer-cy too.
His soul shall live se-cure on earth,
With se-cret bless-ings on his head,
When drought, and pest-i-lence and dearth
A-round him mul-ti-ply their dead.
Or, if he lan-guish on his couch,
God will pro-nounce his sins for-giv'n,
Will save him with a heal-ing touch,
Or take his will-ing soul to heav'n.
