The Forgotten Spurgeon
Iain Murray
Contemporary
|
|
Charles Haddon Spurgeon was one of the most popular and influential preachers
of the 1800's. Many of the accounts of Spurgeon's ministry have been distorted
by authors who were not sympathetic to Spurgeon's theological beliefs.Murray's
account is centered around three major controversies during Spurgeon's life and
ministry: In the 1850's, he stood against the diluted Gospel which was then
fashionable. In the 1860's, he was heavily involved in the great "Baptismal
Regeneration" debate. Toward the end of his life, around 1890, he opposed the
modernist heresies which were entering the churches in the "Downgrade
Controversy".

George Whitefield
Arnold Dallimore
Contemporary
|
|
A wonderful biography of an extraordinary evangelist! Whitefield regularly
preached to crowds of many thousands, and a great many were converted under his
preaching. Whitefield was living proof that strong Calvinistic convictionscan
produce great evangelistic and missionary zeal. The only noteworthy blemish on
his otherwise singular ministry was his unwise association with the
Wesleys—men who introduced into Methodism the heresies of Arminianism and
perfectionism.
