Experience
IT Security & Personal Computing Leader Owens Corning
2007-Present
In late 2007 my role was expanded to lead the combined IT Security and Personal Computing team to develop our secure and high performance desktop environment. Team responsibilities include: 1-3 year strategy roadmaps for security and personal computing technologies, architecture and design of our desktop and remote access environments and keeping our global infrastructure secure. As an “interim” responsibility, I also provided temporary/transitional leadership for our Network Services team for several months while a new leader for that team was being recruited / sourced. The close working relationship between IS Security and the network team and my understanding of our global infrastructure made this a natural fit.

Security Leader Owens
Corning
2000-2007 Toledo,
In 7 years I transformed Owens Corning security systems from a scattered collection of diverse practices, spread across many departments and facilities into a focused, managed security process. Under my leadership, a team of security analysts and administrators developed, communicated and implemented common global security processes reducing cost and facilitating growth. We went from hundreds of man-hours battling virus and worm infections in 2000 to a handful of sporadic and tightly-controlled incidents today, eliminating waste and delivering a secure environment. Regular security audits and remediation projects insure that standards are met. Intrusion detection and continuous monitoring of our infrastructure maintain the security of our day-to-day operations as we insure the security of IT projects and systems world-wide. In addition we have reduced Internet abuse and provide ongoing fraud and forensic analysis for our businesses while facilitating secure acquisitions and divestitures. Our secure manufacturing control networks make our manufacturing facilities safer and more secure. And I’m proud of the fact that we’ve done this so effectively with a talented and motivated staff of just five professional security associates – this in a $6 billion company of 20,000 employees. In this role I reported to the Director of IS Operations. Our biggest value is enabling the business by deploying critical technology in a secure environment.
Internet
/ Intranet Infrastructure Manager Owens
Corning
1998-2000 Toledo,
Leading a team of highly technical resources managing our Internet/intranet infrastructure, I reported to the Director of Global Computing Technology. In support of corporate Internet access and e-business needs, we upgraded firewalls and other security facilities. We outsourced a number of infrastructure operations, improving security and at the same time reducing costs. Customer and HR recruiting portals now use this infrastructure for customer service and to control hiring costs. This standard infrastructure resulted in reduced support and maintenance costs worldwide. I thoroughly enjoyed this highly technical opportunity as well as the leadership challenge.
Web
Development Team Manager End-User
Computing
1997-1998 Toledo,
I joined End User Computing to broaden my business experience and deepen my technical skills with this small, private consulting firm. Reporting to the President and CEO, I managed a team of analysts and developers to design and develop custom Internet and intranet applications. These ranged from municipal water treatment systems and city government information kiosks to Fortune 500 web applications. This role provided me with a very intense and focused learning experience allowing me to hone my technical skills at the same time developing customer service skills, pre- and post-sale support skills. The consultancy practice also helped me refine my selling and consulting skills. For the last six months of my tenure with EUC, I contracted with Owens Corning.
Intranet
and Communications Manager Owens
Corning
Working under the CIO, I led the Intranet and Communications team to
develop our secure global corporate intranet. After a quick development and
pilot phase, I managed the growth of our corporate intranet at a rate of 100%
per month. This facility provided the communication platform for a global SAP
deployment, corporate information reporting and a worldwide continuous learning
facility, “

Systems Architecture Manager Owens
Corning
Reporting to the CIO, I managed a team of highly technical analysts to develop our global computing and network architecture. Moving to an open-system based architecture allowed us to obsolete our expensive IBM mainframes. We continue to leverage this strategy and reduce costs by following the commodity computing cost curve down. Our move from a patchwork of different networking technologies to a standardized network has provided us with a centrally managed infrastructure reducing deployment and support costs and facilitating our global SAP deployment.
Workplace Technology Vision and Communication Owens Corning
I developed the technology vision for the new state-of-the-art Owens Corning World Headquarters, reporting to our CIO, Mike Radcliff. Most of the technologies I described in “A Day in the Life of Owens Corning” have been implemented since then including: wireless workstations, widespread video and audio conferencing, ubiquitous access to network services, IP telephony, a campus wireless phone network and advanced conference room technology - all resulting in improved productivity.
Desktop
Computing, Minicomputer Support Owens
Corning
I supported UNIX and proprietary minicomputers, Microsoft Windows and OS/2 platforms while rapidly moving from an entry-level analyst to a Lead Technical Specialist (a technical career track position) before moving onto the leadership track. As a result, I’m comfortable both in a deeply technical individual contributor role as well as a team leader/manager.
As an early technology adopter and advocate I introduced a number of firsts into Owens Corning: first IBM PC; first Ethernet network; first successful client/server system. I published a widely read internal technology futures newsletter called “Technotes”. I love technology and this role prepared me for a career of continuous learning and skill development.
