I am self-taught and to anyone who finds the subject of interest, I heartily recommend
following the same path. Study the work and techniques of "the masters" in the field, of which there are too many to name here. Take a "Photography Course" at your own peril. I have personally witnessed the destruction of all interest, hope, and appreciation for the subject in promising students, at the hands of close-minded and totally inept instructors. As with any art form; if you can apprentice someone, who's work you greatly admire both technically and artistically, you are indeed fortunate. Any work of art can be broken down into two parts. 1. the message 2. the technical ability required to present that message as aesthetically as possible. It is not difficult to find artwork that communicates a message. It is rare to find truly exceptional technical quality. Artists in many fields, throughout history, have launched and maintained entire careers solely by exhibiting a mastery in one or the other. The truly great artist has a message to communicate, and exhibits a mastery of technique that communicates that message at an aesthetic level capable of reaching the spiritual core of his audience.
