3rd Ed Character
Generation rules
-
More or less the 4d6 generation
method, with a few exceptions.
-
If you have three stats with penalties,
go ahead and reroll all.
-
Go ahead and reroll any stat with
a penalty of 3 or more.
-
If you average to greater than
a +2, this
character is probably a little over the top. I won't mandate a reroll,
but bear in mind, that to challenge your character, things are going to
get dangerous for your friends... bwahahaha...
-
Likewise, if you average out with
a +1 or
less, a reroll is probably a good idea. I've found that averaging a modifier
of +1.5
or so gives a good balance to the character. 1.16 seems to be a lower powered
character, or a moderately powered character with some drawbacks, whereas
a 1.83 average is a high-powered character, or one with very solid stats,
and no drawbacks.
-
I am willing to allow 1 or 2 points
to be "shuffled"
to allow for flexibility, but not to exceed racial maximums. For example,
no 1st level dwarven barbarians with a 22 constitution(!).
If you get a magic item that bumps that up there, that's OK, just not as
an innate, starting stat.
As with any rules (especially
for D20 D&D),
these are guidelines, not set in stone. However, anyone seeking an exception
should contact me, and be prepared to sell me on the reason why. The reason
for these guidelines, is to keep everyone more or less on an even keel,
at least to start with. No one likes to play the character with the highest
stat a 15, with the lowest being an 8, when the guy next to you has a lowest
stat of 16, and fears nothing.
