Dave and Ku took about ten days off just before the Fall Semester of '98 and drove from Baton Rouge down to Mexico via San Antonio. They parked on the US side (Laredo, Texas) and walked across the border. As they headed off on their Mexican adventure, they soon realized that they should have more thoroughly researched the Mexican bus system. Although it seemed at times that they would never be able to properly communicate (their fault for having not an ounce of Spanish knowledge between them), and that when they did get it right, the psychotic bus drivers would kill them (the drivers' fault for being psychotic), they managed to stay pretty much on schedule. They breezed through Monterrey to the "ghost town" of Real de Catorce, got stranded in San Luis Potosi, and finally arrived at their final destination of Xilitla. From Xilitla, a semi-short hike out into the jungle brought them to the Enchanted Gardens of Edward James (Las Pozas to the locals) which was built by an eccentric Englishman who ended up living there when it was done. It truly must be seen to be appreciated, but basically it consists of a wacky assortment of stone and steel sculptures, spiral staircases that lead to nowhere, and nine pools which stem from water diverted by James himself to run through his menagerie, all in the middle of the jungle. Oh, and best of all, they have a couple of bungalows so you can spend the night there! Dave and Ku attempted to capture the essence of the place on film, but they definitely recommend seeing it for yourself:
