The Importance of Making ThingsMaking things can change the world. Before the Pueblo Indians were forcibly absorbed by the Navajo, they were a peaceful tribe whose men did the weaving. After their absorption, the boys and men were trained to perform more aggressive and “masculine” tasks, including those of warfare, and the women took over the weaving. It’s hard to drop bombs when you’re knitting. And it’s almost impossible to kill someone when you’re sewing. If people, especially boys and men, were busy making things, they’d have less time and energy and inclination to build weapons and start wars and kill people. You also can’t make anything when you’re drunk or strung out on drugs. So do the world a favor--go make something! Even better, teach someone else to make something, too! Yee-hah!
