White Lake, Mi.

White Lake is located just off Lake Michigan, midway up the western coast of Lower Michigan - about 23 miles north of Grand Haven. A channel connects Lake Michigan to White Lake. White Lake itself is about 6 miles long, with the twin towns of Montague and Whitehall located at the far (eastern) end of the lake. Here is where you will find most marinas, including White Lake Municipal Marina.

The lighthouse is located about midway up the channel, and has been converted into a museum. Like most lighthouses on the Michigan side of the lake, it is on the south side of the channel. This particular lighthouse is said to be haunted.

The White Lake Municipal Marnia, like many municipal marinas in Michigan, only offers fixed docks. This has not traditionally been a problem, but the current low lake levels may mean a large step up for smaller boats. Several of the private marinas offer limited transient facilities on an occasional basis as well.

From most of the marinas, you can walk into either Whitehall (on the south side of the lake) or Montague (on the north side). There is ample shopping and restrurants in these areas.

While you are at the municipal marina, you must visit Armstrong's Marina. You don't want to stay there, but it is a sight you will never see again in your life. Armstrong's is adjacent to the municipal marnia, so it isn't much of a trek to get there.

This area is quite a contrast from the congestion and fast pace of the other ports in the region. It is a refreshing laid-back atmosphere, and consequently, there are many sailboats in this area. If you have a large boat, beware that there is a speed limit on White Lake for 40+ ft boats of 6 MPH. There is no local speed limit for smaller boats.
