Muskegon is the largest city on the west coast of Michigan having access to the lake. It is located about 13 miles north of Grand Haven. Muskegon itself is on the south shore of Muskegon Lake, with access to Lake Michigan via a channel. Muskegon is a fairly industrial city, and has some occasional shipping traffic to contend with. Muskegon lake itself has many shallow spots and rocky shoals, and it is advisable to have a chart before attempting to boat here.

The entrance to Muskegon consists of an outer breakwater and inner channel. You can see the breakwater light in the background, with the main lighthouse on the south side of the channel in the foreground. This is a rather wide channel, sufficient for shipping.

About midway up the channel you will see the USS Silversides, a WW-II submarine, along with a couple of Coast Guard boats. The submarine is a museum, and you can take a tour for a nominal fee to the preservation society. Legend has it that an Appendectomy was once done on board - on the officer's mess table. This event was portrayed in the movie 'Operation Petticoat'.
There are several marinas in Muskegon, including a municipal marina. They are located in an industrial section of the downtown area, and are not in the best locations. The recommendation - if you want to stay in Muskegon, is at Great Lakes Marina.

Occasionally, you will see a schooner or other tall ship in Muskegon Lake. A couple of years ago, they hosted the Tall Ships event. No word on whether or not they will be back.
