Ludington, MI.

A foggy day at the Ludington Municipal Marina.

I give the Municipal Marina in Ludington high marks. Located about midway between Chicago, Il and Mackinac City, MI, on Michigan's West coast, it is a great little town. It is trailer boat friendly. You can launch your boat at the public ramp - about 2 blocks away, pull into a transient slip, then walk back to your vehicle.

Also within walking distance is the famous House of Flavors - undoubtedly the best ice cream in the world. See if you can eat a Super Pig (7 scoops of ice cream in a piggie trough). My eldest son can only handle the regular Pig (4 scoops).

The marina doesn't allow trailer storage on-site, but they do have off-site trailer storage. Also, a private storage facility - "Gold Coast Storage" rents secured space by the week for your trailer. For me, its worth the ten bucks it costs at Gold Coast.

For a public marina it is very nice. The marina has modern facilities - all new, including showers, day room, laundry, fish cleaning station, and dish washing station. There is even an internet port in the day room for your laptop. About the only thing this marina lacks is a swimming pool. The marina accepts reservations - and I highly recommend you reserve your spot.

One of the daily events is the sailing of the SS Badger from Ludington. The ship makes two daily round trips to Manitowoc, WI. This is a ferry boat, and you can take your car or truck across the lake. 50 years ago, the Badger belonged to the Chessie System railroad, and transported freight cars across the lake. However, today, it only transports vehicles.

We made a second trip to Ludington with our Vista268. This time we stayed with the larger boats in the fixed dock area. We are next to a 45ft Carver motoryacht. This guy banged into the dock, and then into the 35ft boat next to him when he backed this big boy in.

Ya know, that lighthouse does lean a bit!
