Do not use while stupid
Five little words that could change our world as we know it. Corporate America; listen up. Want to cut down your product liability claims? Simply put these 5 little words on your product. There is a lot of power in these 5 words.
Got a product liability claim? Someone use a lawn mower you made to trim their hedges and cut their fingers off?
For once, liability claim lawyers would have to have their clients justify why cutting their fingers off was not an act of stupidity. .. Didn’t your client see the sign? What sign? The one that said “Do not use while stupid”? So to justify the product liability claim, the client will have to admit that what they did was stupid, therefore, this is a self-correcting situation. If they have to admit they were stupid to do what they did, then the sign warned them not to do it. Case closed.
Legislators, trying to pass a law to make it illegal to text while driving? Come on now, anyone with half a brain knows trying to do so is plain dumb. But we have some in our society that do exactly that. How about simply passing a law requiring “Do not use while stupid” be put on the dashboard of every car in America. Better yet; I bet the car makers would do this voluntarily, if it means no more liability claims.
You rear-ended the car in front of you, says the policeman? Uh, I guess so, says the kid. I see you have a cell phone in your lap, were you texting? The kid looks up sheepishly, uh yea. Didn’t you see the “Do not use while stupid” sign?
Look, this is not a criticism of society, but we all have our stupid moments - even the most normal of us. The concept of "Do not use while stupid" simply states that when we have those moments... think of what you are doing.
Well, I would say this idea is my gift to society, but I got to pay my bills and feed my kids. So, corporate America, if you find this idea has merit and use it, please send me 10% of the liability claims you prevent, and we’ll call it even.
