MARK MCGOVERN'S

CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON

Original 1963 Aurora issue, 1/8 scale (styrene).

Purchased as a buildup before even the Monogram reissue, I had to scratchbuild the small tree, snake, and the lizard's tongue. I also added an interior to the lizard's mouth by making an insert from Sculpy thermosetting clay. The wooden display base was signed by Ben Chapman, who portrayed the Creature on dry land in the 1953 film.

By the way, the detail on the base seems to be open to wide interpretation. I viewed it as representing water that is flowing out of the cave and over the rocks. Therefore I painted it with several shades of muddy green in transparent layers. Then I drybrushed the pebbly-textured areas with white tinted with the dirty green colors to represent "white water". The watery areas of the base, the Creature's feet, and his lower legs were coated with several applications of Future Acrylic Floor Polish in order to appear wet.
