Objectives for Quiz 2
These objectives can be used by the student to prepare for the second
quiz to be administered in early February. The questions on the
quiz will b multiple choice and short answers. They will assess
the student mastery of skills taught to this point in the course.
During the quiz each student will work independently and will have
access to their computer as a reference. The quiz will be timed so
don't come unprepared. Use these objectives to sharpen your skills
and knowledge.
The student shall be able to explain and use the following commands;
- commands for managing the printer
- lpq
- lprm
- lpc
- lpr
- lpd
- lpstat
- mounting/unmounting removable media, NFS and SAMBA shares which
may or may not be defined in the /etc/fstab file
- more
- tail
- head
- commands for dealing with ownerships and permissions
- Archiving files/directories with File Roller
- archiving home directory
- tar
- bzip2/bunzip2
- zip/unzip
- gzip/gunzip
- cat
- piping commands
- more/less
- date

Conduct system maintenance at runlevel 1
Modify your environment PATH
vi editor
Demonstrate and ability to open a file
in a vi edting session
Enter the insert mode of the vi editor
Exit the insert mode of the vi editor
Save a file while exiting the vi editor after modifying it
Ownerships and permissions
Be able to identify the owner and group
properties of a file/directory
Be able to identify the permissions of a file/directory
Be able to modify the ownership and/or permissions of a file/directory
How to modify system wide environment
Check one's command history
The student shall be able to start, stop, restart and check the status
of a service
- at the command line
- using the GUI utility
The student shall be able to disable/enable services controlled by the
super daemon, xinetd
The student shall be able to determine the status of their computer's
firewall
- if you're not able to connect to an NFS share
- if you're unable to use the ssh command
- someone is unable to connect to one of your services
