Objectives for Quiz 1
These objectives can be used by the student to prepare for the first
quiz to be administered on January 21st. The questions on the quiz
will b multiple choice and short answers. They will assess the
student mastery of skills taught to this point in the course.
During the quiz each student will work independently and will have
access to their computer as a reference. The quiz will be timed
so don't come unprepared. Use these objectives to sharpen your
skills and knowledge.
The student shall be able to explain and use the following commands;
- cd with relative and absolute paths
- pwd
- ls with the -l, -a and -la options
- su & su -
- whoami
- exit
- ping
- ifconfig
- ifup
- ifdown
- startx
- halt
- reboot
- shutdown with the -r & -h options
- rpm with -ivh, -q, -e, --rebuilddb and/or -V options
- tar with the z, x, v and f options
- declare
- man
- mv
- cp
The student shall be able to identify the paths necessary to start the
GNOME GUI based utilities to;
- configure printers
- mount/unmount cdroms
- mount/unmount floppies
- mount/unmount zips
- browse the hardware installed on your PC
- switch desktops
- format a floppy
- open a shell (identify two methods)
- add/remove applications
- logout of the GUI
The student shall be able to use and explain the following keyboard
sequences;
- Ctrl - Alt - Backspace
- Ctrl - Alt - Delete
- Ctrl - Alt - F#
The student shall be able to identify the paths necessary to start the
GNOME GUI based applications other than from the panel;
- Mozilla browser
- OpenOffice applications
- FTP client
- Email client
- Text editor
