Driving down was even harder than going up.

But eventually the conditions improved and I was on dry pavement again.
Thanks to my experience at Lake Paulina, I did not venture to Crater Lake. Crater Lake is actually at a lower altitude but the lip of the crater is much higher. It gets almost 500" of snow annually and from what I learned at an info center later on, July and August are just about the only months that it doesn't snow there. Think about this. On average, that's over 4' of snow a month! This is as close as I got to my objective for the weekend.
Another beautiful Oregon sunset as I drove south to Klamath Falls instead.
The next day, the Jetta logged its first 1000 miles on Route 97 heading south to Klamath Falls. Don't worry, I had the cruise control on and the steering wheel attached to the visor with a rubber band while taking this picture.
Route 97 south as I pass my first 1000 miles in this car.
Next stop, an overlook east of Upper Klamath Lake. That's Route 97 heading into Klamath Falls below.
This wasn't exactly an advertised overlook. I actually drove past it and then saw this gravel road heading up into the sky like a giant escelator to heaven, so naturally I had to drive it.
Coming down was fun too.
Next stop, the 42nd parallel which marks the border between California and Oregon.Looking south into California...
... and north into Oregon.
Looking north into Oregon. Some civil engineers obviously overestimated the interest of this point. Check out the capacity of this parking lot. I can't imagine so many people getting excited about Rt.97 crossing into California in the middle of nowhere all at once.
The Jetta profiling its booty at the state line.
Heading back north, I stop at a chain-up area to take this picture of the Upper
Klamath Lake from the west side.
Driving along the lake before crossing the mountains to Medford.
And of course, to stake my reputation as a rambling gambler, I had to stop by a casino on my way home. This is Seven Feathers along I5.
By the time I got out of the casino, the sun had set already.

Keep in mind that I missed quite a few great picture opportunities just cause I was having so much fun driving. So in memory of all those great driving moments that couldn't be captured in a JPeg, I offer this picture.
