Turning south, I headed into the desert. This picture only looks like I'm on the wrong side of the road but those who know me will attest to the fact that I am actually a very safe and cautious driver... well when I'm not taking pictures. But it didn't matter, because it's not like there was anyone else using this road at the time.

Mt. Hood from the east side. Portland is exactly opposite on the other side of the mountain. You can see fresh snow on it. Except for the ever present glaciers, it looked pretty brown only a week ago.

Desert river.

Some house type dwellings overlooking the river.

Some cows stare at me and the Jetta as I make another stop on the edge of the indian reservation. These cows know a nice car when they see it. I could see the admiration in their bovine eyes.

Random close-up of the side turn signal.

Road leading up to the Indian Head Casino.

The casino itself. Those Indians sure know how to take my money. I usually do well at casinos but I left this one $10 poorer. I have to admit that this place has some spectacular desert views. I would recommend visiting. I'll try to spend a night there one of these weekends.

The Jettster at some geologic strata.

Some more desert views around the casino.

When I left, after dinner, the sun was already getting low in the sky. These shadows really make the desert look nice. Oregon has the most beautiful sunsets.

On the way out of the reservation, there still were some good turns to be made.

Finally, at sunset, a view of Mt. Hood from the south.

I got back home around 7, for a total time on the road of just over 10 hours. Final odometer reading: 450 (I made the first fill-up at Warm Springs, a two horse town 14 miles south of the Indian Head Casino, for $2.05/gal of Shell Premium).

Thanks go out to Jen who put the Jetta idea in my head by taking us out for pizza in hers.
