I was able to share with my mom before she returned to Ireland and a little with my
dad.... Looking to the Lord to open doors of opportunity for us to Proclaim His
Word.....Pray for us as we come to mind, we are tired and emotionally beat up....thanks .
Hope the study will be a blessing....I am including it as I wrote in answer to a question
I received...I spoke 7 times this past week-end and trust He was honored...thanks for
those of you who identify with us ...we are grateful to Him for you.....if we can help or
pray for you PLEASE let us know....hope you enjoy and APPLY the study ..God bless, you are
loved- Eph 1:6
BECOMING A "MAN OF GOD"
The study is from 1 Tim 6:11- A- "Man of God."
Background to Book;
Paul was writing to Timothy concerning what the Church ought to Be- 1 Tim 3:14-16.
The times they were in were difficult in the congregation and there is Problems and sin in
the Congregation
A.- False Teaching- 1:3-7
B.- Disorder in the Worship- 2:1-15
C.- Materialism and the arrogance that tends to accompany it- 6:6-19
D.- There was a need to structure the Qualification of Leadership within the congregation-
3:1-13, elders and deacons...So Paul writes to Timothy about these issues and so the
church can be what they should be for Gods Glory- Eph 3:21
TIMOTHY;
A. -His name means "one who honors God."
B. - Exposed to the Scriptures from a young boy-2 Tim 3:15
C.- Was led to the Lord by Paul - 1:2
The Scripture reveals that Timothy was
1. Young
2. Timid
3. Frequently sick
Yet that did not hinder him or used as an excuse by him to not live for others, for Gods
Glory- Phil 2:21
In 1 Tim 6- We want to consider the MARK'S OF A MAN OF GOD.
The term "man of God" is only used twice in the NEW TESTAMENT."
Paul warns him against false teachers who are characterized by GREED...
A "Man of God" Can be Known and is easily Recognizable!!!!!
What IT DOES NOT mean
A. - Giftedness
B. - Busyness
C. -Talented
D. - Vocal...these 4 are no "guarantee" of "spirituality or
Christlikeness."
It has to do with the CHARACTER of the Man
WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
A "Man of God" is known by what he (1 TIM 6:11) - "FLEES from."
We derive our English word "Fugitive" from this Greek word. A fugitive does
everything they can not to be apprehended, and SO must the Man of God continually and
habitually do likewise.
Flee-It is a Command to continually, habitually do as a pattern of one's life.
He is to FLEE
1.- Sexual Immorality- 1 Cor 6:18
A.-Matt 5:27
B- Prov7:6
C. Prov 7:22,27
D.- Gal 5:19
E.-1 Cor 6:18-20- The purpose of your body is to "Glorify God."
He is to FLEE
2.- Idolatry
A.-1 Cor 10:16
B. - Gal 5:19-21- Idolatry is a sin of the Flesh ...It is Offensive to God.
Idolatry is to Place someone or Something above and Before God
C. -Rev 21?:8- Idolaters will not inherit the kingdom of God.
He is to FLEE
3. Youthful Lusts 2 Tim 2:22
Not necessarily sexual sin ...though not Excluding it. Anything that would CAPTURE you Any
sinful yearning...for power, possessions, pride etc....
He is to FLEE
4. 1 Tim 6:1 "These things"
A. False Teachers...behind their teaching is a Motivation for Money-Greed... the evil
associated with loving Money.
Fleeing is not a Fleeing Aimlessly FROM .....Now comes the Second Mark of a "Man of
God."
He is Known by what he...
2. PURSUE'S - v 11
Pursue- Again a Command to HABITUALLY AND CONTINUALLY AS A PATTERN OF LIFE PURSUE... he IS
TO flee FROM SIN ....TO Holiness...
6 things he is Commanded to continually, habitually follow after as a pattern for his
life in this verse...
He is to pursue...
A.- Righteousness - Mat 6:33
Mat 5:6
Righteousness- Being Right with God and doing Right for God.... He can be trusted to do
the RIGHT thing before God and for God...You can trust him to do the right thing. His life
is MARKED by OBEDIENCE to God's Word
...External....
B. GODLINESS or "Godlike." Reverence for God flowing from a heart of Worship.
An Internal Attitude Motivates his heart. Has to do with Attitudes and Actions. Right
behavior a result of an Internal Right attitude.
C. FAITH- Confident Trust in God in Everything
He 11:6
2 Tim 1:12 - Personal Trust in a Person
Faith is the ENVIRONMENT in which the man of God lives and operates in. He believes God
and His Word and acts upon it- 2 Cor 5:7 He trusts God to fulfill His Word
D. LOVE-
Love for God- Matt 22:37
Love for neighbor
Love for enemies- Luke 6:27
Love for Christians- -Jn 13:34-35
Love is what characterizes your life - 1 John 3:16-18
Loves Behavior - 1 Cor 13:4-7
Love can be learned- - 1 Thes 4:9-10
Love is a VERB-It is an Action. Biblical/ Agape Love is the choosing through self denial
and sacrificially on your part lay down your rights for the benefit of others for the
glory of God- 2 Cor 4:5
E. PERSEVERANCE - Not quitting but Triumphantly continuing
F. GENTLENESS-KINDNESS OR HUMILITY
Characterized the Life of the Lord Jesus-Matt 11
To Characterize the Lord's servant-2 Tim 2:24-26 ..."must be GENTLE."
The "Man of God" is known by and is IDENTIFIABLE by what He
1. FLEES from
2. PURSUES After
He is Known by what he
3. FIGHTS for
"Fight"...we get our English word '"agonize" from the same Greek
word.... Using every ounce of energy he Fights for ETERNAL ISSUES.... It is a COMMAND to
Fight
"What do you fight over?... He know he is in a War. A Spiritual War...2 Tim 4:7
He fights for the Word of God. As God's Spokesman he is at war with satan, sin, the world
system and the self life, apathetic Christians, ecumenicalism and error, false
teaching....he battles the kingdom of darkness -Eph 6:12
"FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT OF FAITH"- V12
It speaks of a spiritual conflict the Christian lives in and against evil and
satans kingdom Eph 6:12, 2 Tim 2:26
To "fight the good fight of faith" it speaks of concentration and effort and
discipline...the word was often used of both Military and athletes..."Faith here
speaks of the Word of God- Matt 7: Jesus says it is to be our
"foundation"
"Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called"
Paul is telling Timothy to get a GRIP on the REALITY of ETERNAL THINGS....to live in Light
of Eternity
A.- Col 3:1-3
B. -Matt 6:21, 24
C. - Matt 6:33 "Keep seeking as FIRST PRIORITY the Kingdom of God"....What are
you seeking as the priority of your life. What do your ACTIONS PROVE ABOUT YOU?"
The "MAN OF God" is IDENTIFIABLE by what He is
4. FAITHFUL to- v13-14
The whole Word of God. It is a Command to "guard, keep" -means "to guard
something by observing."...The Word of God
Paul told Timothy to
A.- Preach it- 2 Tim 4:2
B.-Study it - 2:15
C.- Guard it- 6:6....
Pay close attention to it.....Live it....Proclaim it when it is popular and unpopular [in
season and out of season."
So the "Man of God" Is Identifiable by what he
1. FLEES from
2. PURSUES after
3. FIGHTS For
4. FAITHFUL to
And you cannot do 2-4 if #1 is not a reality....
What type of Man are you? MANY TYPES OF MEN..WHAT characterized THE bent, practice OF
THEIR LIFE..."Man of Greed,...Pride.. Immoral, Sports mad....materially bound...glory
seekers...praise hounds for themselves..."
These are the MARKS OF A "MAN OF GOD".
What MOTIVATES the Man of God?
1. The Reality of God's Presence -v13
2. The Return of God's Son - v14
3. Meditation ON GOD'S CHARACTER/Person .v 15-16
The Second time "man of God " is used in the N.T is in 2 Tim 3:15-17
Becoming a "Man of God"
What is it that "Equips" the "Man of God?" ... The WORD OF GOD which
is Sufficient for
1. Salvation /Evangelization- 2 Tim 3:15
2. Sanctification /Edification- v 16
You can be a "Man of God" and indeed should be easily identifiable as one as you
chose to Know what God says a "Man of God ' is and Choose to Apply diligently
obedience to His Word.....
God Bless,
Aidan for Cindee
Mary, John-Keith, Noah, Evan and Isaiah
